Growing Hope: Community Gardens flourish amidst El Nino challenges

Amidst an Elnino induced drought, Marita, a 59-year-old widow and mother of four, has found renewed hope through a solarized community borehole and garden established with support from the USAID-funded Takunda project. Previously, Marita struggled to feed her family after the loss of her husband in 2003. Now, she cultivates 28 garden beds, selling tomatoes and leafy greens, earning between $12 and $15 weekly.

Ignited Potential: Lisa’s story

Lisa is the first in her family to transition to Advanced level (form 5), thanks to the support from the START4Girls project. She benefited from study packs distributed to 51 schools in Buhera District. These study packs contained materials for five subjects, specifically designed to meet the form four O’Level curriculum requirements. With these resources, she was able to understand the concepts and prepare effectively for her exams. As a result, she passed with flying colors and has now advanced to the Advanced level.

Rumbidzai lives in Zaka district, situated in rural Masvingo, which grapples with persistent drought conditions. This is primarily attributed to erratic rainfall patterns and the detrimental effects of climate change, including the El Niño-induced drought. CARE and its partners working with communities to improve soil and water conservation practices for farmers like Rumbidzai to better manage the limited water resources and maintain soil fertility, even during periods of low rainfall.
