Despite facing a challenging dry spell, Fungai, a resilient farmer from Buhera persevered by adopting various climate-smart techniques that resulted in a remarkable harvest. Zimbabwe like the rest of the Southern African region faced a dry spell and high temperatures which led to severe water stress for crops across most parts of the country during the farming season.

When the dry spell hit Buhera district, neighboring farmers faced significant losses and struggled to sustain their crops. However, Fungai’s farm in ward 8 cluster 5 stood as a testament to the power of resilience and sustainable practices.

Fungai’s journey as a farmer took an inspiring turn when she embraced sustainable practices of climate smart agriculture to cultivate a thriving crop of orange-fleshed maize.  Drawing from water harvesting and soil preservation techniques she learned through CARE’s Takunda project funded by USAID, she embarked on an inspiring journey towards agricultural sustainability.

Her crop managed to survive the October to November dry spell due to the water harvested by the bioswale she constructed. The water was conserved throughout the season by the extensive mulch she applied in her improved planting stations. This ensured her crops had access to the vital moisture they needed to survive.

The nutritious maize will not only provide sustenance for Fungai’s family but will also contribute to improved health and well-being for all her family.
